Lemonokipos

(Lemon Gardens or Golden Lemon)

Lemonokipos in Greek means garden of lemon trees. The "Lemonokipos Restaurant" started operating in 1983, the owners Christina and Gregoris Charalambous ( Father Gregori). The restaurant is situated in the Maroni area, 300 metres from the sea in a lovely, romantic area. In summer time it is an ideal place offering excellent food in the cool evenings under the beautiful vine arbour. During the Spring months again, the orange blossom smells from a distance.

During the first years of the restaurant, life was not as easy as now in this agricultural area, with no electricity, drinking water and telephones.

But because of Christina's smiling face and pleasant manners, together with Father Gregori's efforts, this unique restaurant remained open offering excellent home-made food, fresh fish and other Cypriot meze in a peaceful family way. Father Gregoris, who knows the human nature well, always gives his counsels in a really nice way. His customers are people from all over the world. Many times they come back to enjoy the good food and the quiet family atmosphere.
Ever Thursday night in the summer Kleftiko, how nice it is to have it but! Why is it just in the summer months and what can we now look forward to?

Well Kleftiko it is made with lamb or goat, which must be over 1 year old, the season for slaughtering these animals is in the summer. Animals also at this time of year have a slightly different type of hormone level, which changes as the colder weather comes.
The best Kleftiko is served when the weather is hot as the fat and juices do not solidify on the plate.

How is it made?
The ingredients are: Meat, Carob leaves, and a little salt.
Yes, that is it.
A large deep tray or bowl has a layer of Carob leaves, well branches taken from the edges of the tree. Then with the correct meat cleaned and wrapped in a string-stocking layer on top. Then a small amount of sea salt sprinkled directly on the meat with a seconded layer of Carob leaves on the top. The container is then covered with baking foil at least three thicknesses and the whole thing is then placed in the oven for 6 to 8 hours. NOT touched for this time just left in a moderate oven where the Carob leaves and salt work their magic on the meat. Add the famous potatoes, a meal fit for a king.

What’s next?
The type of meat dish made in the oven for the winter months is a roast, yes but not what you would think. Meat, which could be lamb, pork or chicken in placed as a parcel in the oven, the parcel that is again baked in foil contains onions, carrots, potatoes, herbs and the meat. Now if you wish to sample this delight it will also be available from the Lemon gardens every Sunday in the winter, please book on Saturday as with the Kleftiko it requires some time in the oven.
