Happy Valley

(Happy Valley House)

A dream come true, The building: Happy Valley House building work started in 1929 by two brothers Stelios & Dimitri Achilleoudes (after their return from America). Situated on the then main road between Limassol and Nicosia the junction with roads from Lefkara and Agios Theodoros.

Officially opened in January 1934 with a grand party including Jazz band attended by many people of distinction from far and wide, at this then busy junction that had 4 Taverns, Lefkara lace, fruit, vegetables and all manner of handy crafts by enterprising youths were sold and exchanged. Speaking to one of the youths, now a successful restaurant owner, but still very happy in remembering those times. “ We used to spend hours making up Pine cones with jasmine flowers in, walk to the cross roads from Agios Theodoros some 2 miles and sell them for a half penny or even one penny. If we made a shilling that day we would be very happy ”.

Over the years Happy Valley House had its own petrol station, was used as a Post office and even a Telephone exchange. Achilleas’s father then retired and rented out the building. Progress then stepped in and the motorway came, the area became quiet and all the buildings closed down for many years.

The people: Achilleas in the mean time went to the local school in Lefkara and when 16 years of age was sent by his farther to Athens to continue his education, but he never reached there as his older brother Adam went to Africa, he decided to follow him where he stayed for 30 Years.
Mean while in Leeds, England Pauline studied Art and sang with a ‘Fringe’ electric band called ‘Dead Leg’ !

At the age of 30 decided to become ‘grown up’ so did a business studies course at a very prim ‘college for young ladies’ in Darlington. Later worked for Tetleys Brewery and moved into catering management. Achilleas had by this time opened his own nightclubs and Restaurant in Johannesburg, South Africa. Achilleas decided to return home for the quiet life back in Cyprus to his family house. He arrived to find a deserted building in a deserted area but started to clean up and remove the local wild life from his home.
In 1992 Pauline arrived in Cyprus for a holiday and they met, she had to go back to England but kept in touch. Achilleas started to squeeze and sell orange juice that he made from the orange grove around the house.
Pauline came over for longer and longer holidays as long as it was not when the V.A.T. returns were due at work.
They then married on the 7th November 1994 and both started the up hill struggle of restoring Happy Valley House the dream which is slowly being realized. The squeezing went,’ the oranges I mean’ and the Laid back Sunday lunches appeared, teas and light lunches followed on Wednesday to Saturday. “We like to think of (Happy Valley House and Gardens) as a friendly place were people can enjoy home cooked food in a relaxing atmosphere ”.
We extend a very big thanks to all our friends and customers for their help and support, without which, the dream would not have been possible.
